Contesto storico: nel 1943 i tedeschi speravano di accorciare il fronte russo eliminando il Kursk Salient, che era stato creato all'indomani della battaglia di Stalingrado. La Wehrmacht, concentrando la maggior parte delle sue divisioni d'élite sul fronte orientale in quest'area relativamente piccola, immaginava che le punte di lancia Panzer sfondassero i fianchi settentrionale e meridionale del saliente per circondare le forze dell'Armata Rossa. Tuttavia, i sovietici disponevano di eccellenti informazioni sul piano tedesco, chiamato Operazione Cittadella. Questo, e i ritardi tedeschi nell’attesa di nuove armi, il carro pesante Tiger e il carro medio Panther, diedero all’Armata Rossa il tempo di costruire una serie di linee difensive e radunare grandi forze di riserva. Questa enorme concentrazione di forze armate su entrambi i lati portò alla più grande battaglia tra carri armati della storia alla periferia di Prokhorovka il 12 luglio 1943. La domanda "avrebbe potuto l'esercito tedesco avere successo in questa offensiva" rimase senza risposta, poiché gli Alleati sbarcarono in La Sicilia e le offensive sovietiche in altre parti del fronte orientale fecero pressioni su Hitler affinché interrompesse l'operazione Cittadella solo dopo 10 giorni.
