歴史的背景：1943 年、ドイツ人はスターリングラードの戦いの余波で作られたクルスクの突端を排除することでロシア戦線を短縮することを望んでいました。ドイツ国防軍は、エリート師団の大部分をこの比較的小さな地域の東部戦線に集中させ、赤軍を包囲するために突出部の北部と南部の側面を突破するパンツァーの先鋒を想定していました。しかし、ソビエトは、オペレーション・シタデルと呼ばれるドイツの計画について優れた知性を持っていました。これと、新しい武器であるタイガー重戦車とパンサー中戦車を待つドイツの遅れにより、赤軍は一連の防御線を構築し、大規模な予備軍を集める時間が与えられました。この両軍の巨大な集中により、1943 年 7 月 12 日、プロホロフカ郊外で史上最大の戦車戦が行われました。 「ドイツ軍はこの攻撃に成功できたのか」という質問は、連合軍がシチリア島に上陸し、東部戦線の他の場所でソビエト攻撃がヒトラーに 10 日後に作戦を中止するように圧力をかけたため、答えられなかった。
