Hnefatafl è un antico gioco da tavolo scandinavo le cui varianti sono state giocate in tutta l'Europa medievale prima ancora che fosse inventato il gioco degli scacchi. In questi cosiddetti giochi di Tafl si combattono due eserciti di dimensioni diverse. L'esercito nero invasore cerca di catturare il re bianco, mentre l'esercito bianco in difesa protegge il loro re e lo aiuta a fuggire.
Spesso chiamato anche il gioco dei vichinghi, Hnefatafl racconta molte storie, come l'invasione Moskowites della Svezia o le orde vichinghe che saccheggiano la Gran Bretagna. Ma qualunque sia la storia, una cosa rimane sempre la stessa: la caccia al re.
Anche se le regole non sono complicate, il gioco offre strategie affascinanti e premia la tattica. Cerca di circondare i pezzi nemici, pianifica in anticipo le tue mosse, attira il tuo avversario in trappole e costringilo ad arrendersi. Catturerai il re per l'oro e la gloria? Riusciranno le guardie leali a trattenere le forze invasori e assicurare la fuga del loro re?
