Speak Amharic helps you learn everyday Amharic phrases for traveling to Ethiopia, talking with family, or living and working there. Tap a phrase to read it, hear it and say it yourself.
Everyday phrases, ready to use
• Over 5000 phrases and words in 17 categories, from greetings and conversation to directions, transportation, food, numbers, medical needs and emergencies.
• Each phrase is shown in English, in Amharic script (Ge'ez, also called Fidel) and in transliteration, so you can say it before you can read it.
• Sounds recorded by native Amharic speakers.
• Slow sound plays phrases at a slower speed. Play immediately starts the audio as soon as you tap a phrase.
• Search the current list to find a phrase, and copy any phrase to use it elsewhere.
Daily Review, so phrases stay with you
Star the phrases you want to keep. They appear in Favorites and join your review deck. Each day the app shows the cards that are due: try to recall the Amharic, reveal the answer, then choose Again, Good or Easy. Phrases you find hard come back sooner. A streak tracks the days you review, and a reminder tells you when cards are waiting.
Practice your pronunciation
Tap the microphone on a phrase, listen to the native recording, record yourself and play both to compare, as often as you like. You are the judge: the app does not score your speaking. Your recording stays on your device.
Learn without a connection
Phrases, audio, favorites, Daily Review and pronunciation practice all work offline, which helps on a flight or where the signal is weak. The Translator and ads need a connection.
What Premium adds
The first five categories, Daily Review and pronunciation practice are free, with ads. Premium unlocks all 17 categories and the Translator, and removes ads. The Translator works between English and Amharic, by typing or by voice, and needs an internet connection.
Premium is a subscription billed through Google Play, which shows the price before you buy. It renews automatically until you cancel in your Google Play subscriptions, and you keep access until the end of the paid period.
