Tales of Crestoria is a gacha RPG created by BANDI NAMCO. This studio is no stranger to most video game fans. As a well-known international video game developer and publisher headquartered in Japan, BANDI NAMCO owns several successful game franchises, such as Gundam, Pac-man, Tales, and more. Tales of Crestoria is the latest RPG adventure game from the Tales game series. It was announced in early 2018 and finally landed on the mobile platform this year. Is Tales of Crestoria worth playing? After playing this game for a few days and here are some of my reviews about this new RPG game.

What's Tales of Crestoria?

Tales of Crestoria is a brand-new gacha mobile game with classic turn-based JPRG gameplay and compelling storylines. Most of the Tales games are separate from each other and there is no exception for Tales of Crestoria. The story revolves around our protagonists Kanata and Misella, who, commit crimes in Crestoria where sinners are condemned, are forced to embark on a dangerous journey to battle against enemies and monsters, and try to survive in this fictional world.

Tales of Crestoria Review

One of the most fascinating features (especially for hard-core Tales games fans) about this game is that you can summon your favorite characters from previous Tales games as you exploring the quests, like Milla from Tales of Xillia or Velvet from Tales of Berseria. These Tales games characters will support the protagonists in the battle and also drive the plot forward. However, Without essential background explanations and the reason why so many non-protagonists are summoned, it may seem overwhelming and confusing for newbies who are not familiar with Tales Games and just start to play Tales of Crestoria.

What really attracts me and keeps me playing for hours is the gripping stories. Although the game sets in a fantasy world of Crestoria, it still contains thought-provoking elements that can be found in the real-life, like humanities, crime, and morality. Playing this game makes me feel like I was watching my favorite anime series and always want to find out more about what will happen next?

Gameplay

Tales of Crestoria Review

Just like other RPG games, Tales of Crestoria features classic turn-based gameplay against various enemies and monsters through the journey. Players can choose their favorite Tales games characters to Join the ally and support them in the battle. The attackers and defenders fall within 6 elemental categories: Water, Fire, Wind, Earth, Light, and Dark. In order to reach the maximum damage dealt and defeat the enemies, players need to attack the enemy with an element vulnerable to theirs. In addition to immersing yourself in fascinating stories and completing quests, Tales of Crestoria also has a PVP mode which allows you to compete with real players in the arena.

Graphics and performance

Tales of Crestoria Review

The total size of the game is about 2.4GB, and it takes a while for you to download the game and update data on your phone. Because of this, you need to make sure your mobile has extra storage to run the game smoothly. The game has been out for a few months, and the complaints never stop - the blurring graphics, too many loading screens, crashes, and more. For me, the graphics are okay, loading screens are also tolerable. However, the most frustrating thing is the game crashes occasionally during my playing. It may take some time for developers to fix these issues and improve the gaming experience.

Rewards and in-app purchases

Tales of Crestoria Review

Tales of Crestoria is now available on Google Play and App Store and is free to play, but there are some in-game currency and other items you can buy to upgrade your characters, summon heroes, and speed up your gaming progress. There are also many ways to acquire that type of currency, like clearing quests, join battles, and more.

Conclusion

This game is rated for the age group of 14 years and above. If you are a Tales fan and love RPG games, you should give it a try. The game may contain some bugs, but if you love the story as I do, you will become addicted.

Pros:

  • Epic role-playing adventure
  • Classic RPG turn-based battles
  • Popular characters from the Tales series

Cons:

  • Too many bugs
