History of Reggae:
Reggae is not just another musical rhythm, it is a style, a way of life, a belief, a social platform and policy. It comes in Jamaica and encompasses several other musical cadences, such as ska, rocksteady, dub, dancehall, ragga, African sounds and calypso. The name was born from the sound produced by the guitar by playing this rate - re 'move down', and gae, 'move up'.
Reggae style born in the 60s and then becomes two subgenres, the original, known as' roots reggae ', and the' dancehall reggae 'typical' 70s Usually reggae is linked to Rastafarians, adherents of a religion that see the Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, the only African king to rule an independent nation in Africa, a deity known as Jah, an abbreviation of Jehovah, inserted in the sacred text of the king James Bible.
The expression 'Rastafari' comes from Ras, Duke or chief, and Tafari, Prince of Peace. This spiritual manifestation emerged in Jamaica among working poor and black peasants, in the decade of 30. She was encouraged by the Jamaican version of a prophecy in the Bible, in part a result of the unprecedented position of monarch in his country, as well as pain relief a people subjected to intense historical exploration.
Other factors driving the growth of Rastafarians are the religious use of marijuana, political aspirations and africanizantes grown by its members, and the lessons taught by Marcus Garvey, reputed as a prophet among them, which has shaped culturally and politically this move.
But reggae is not limited to Rastafarianism, it covers topics such as love, sex and social issues. His pace is light and danceable, with characteristic touches, produced especially for guitar, bass and drums. Boycotted, at first, the white radios, made famous in the world thanks to the mastery of established reggae singers like Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. In the 50 emerging major genre stars like Delroy Wilson, Bob Andy, Burning Espear and Johnny Osbourne and the bands The Wailers, Ethiopians, Desmond Dekker and Skatalites.
The lyrics of reggae songs speak of peace, love, sex, nature, social issues ...
The Wailers, a band started by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer in 1963, is perhaps the most recognized reggae band that made the transition through all three stages of early Jamaican popular music: ska, rocksteady. Other pioneers of significant style include Prince Buster, Desmond Dekker and Ken Boothe.
Reggae in Brazil
It was in the northern region of Brazil that reggae came harder. In the state of Maranhão, especially in the capital São Luís, it is common organizing parties to reggae sound. In the 1970s, musicians like Gilberto Gil and Jorge Ben Jor are influenced by Jamaican music style. In the 1980s, it is the turn of the rock to join the genre of Jamaica, in the lyrics of Paralamas do Sucesso group.
In the 1990s, there are many musicians and bands. We can cite as an example: Black City, Alma D'Jem, Tribo de Jah, Nativus and Sine Calmon & Morro Steaming.
