The Chronicles of Narnia is a cycle of seven fantasy novels written by Clive Staples Lewis. They tell about the adventures of children in a magical country called Narnia, where animals can talk, magic does not surprise anyone, and good fights against evil. “The Chronicles of Narnia” contain many hints of Christian ideas in an accessible form for young readers. In addition to Christian themes, Lewis describes characters with types in Greek and Roman mythology and in traditional British and Irish fairy tales, including explicit motives close to the latter.
The series “The Chronicles of Narnia” is very popular. By 2006, more than 100 million copies of books were sold in 41 languages (Kelly 2006, Guthmann 2005), there are theatrical productions, radio shows, television screenings, film screenings and computer games.
According to some reports, Lewis based his description of the world in the series The Chronicles of Narnia based on the landscapes of the Morne Mountains of County Down located in his native Northern Ireland. According to others, this is a district in Italy.
There are different points of view whether numerous Christian images are accidental. Starting with the biblical appeal at the beginning of the novel “The Chronicles of Narnia”: “the Daughters of Eve”, until the resurrection of the lion Aslan, like the resurrection of Jesus. Lewis comments on the attribution of Christianity in “Other Worlds”.
Lewis, as an expert in the field of allegories, argued that the books were not allegories, and preferred to call the Christian aspects in them “presumptive.” As in what we call alternative history (fiction). As he wrote in the letter
Mrs. Hook in December 1958.
