Paper lanterns have had a long and rich history in Asia, especially in China, where they are considered as a symbol of happiness, good luck, prosperity, protection, and as a feng shui cure. Another type of Asian paper lanterns are the sky lanterns, or the airborne paper lanterns, which are often released into the night sky for aesthetic effect at lantern festivals.
