Alwyn Lopez "Al Jarreau" (born April 12, 1940, age 71) is a United States singer. He was awarded seven Nominations Academy Award music version. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1962. The fifth of six children, he studied at the Student Council President, went to Ripon College, where he also sang with a group called Indigos. Al graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. He went on to earn a master's degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Iowa and worked as a Rehabilitation Adviser in San Francisco and moonlighted with a jazz trio led by George Duke. In 1967, he joined acoustic guitarist Julio Martinez. This duo became a star attraction in a small Sausalito nightclub named Gatsby's. This success contributed to Jarreau's decision to make a professional singing his life and a full-time career.
In 1968, Jarreau made jazz his main job. In 1969, Jarreau and Martinez headed south, where Jarreau appeared in such hot Los Angeles spots as Dino, The Troubadour, and Bitter West End. Television exposure comes from Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, and David Frost. He expanded his nightclub performance to include performing on The Improv between the actions of new comic stars such as Bette Midler, Jimmie Walker, and John Belushi. During this period, he became involved with the United Church of Scientific Religion and the Church of Scientology. Also, roughly at the same time, he began writing his own lyrics, discovering that spiritual tendencies began to impact and even shape his work. In 1975, Jarreau was working with pianist Tom Canning when he was discovered by Warner Bros. Records and soon released his famous critical debut album, We Got By, which catapulted his name to the international and collected his German Grammy Award. A second German Grammy will follow with the release of her second album, Glow. In his extended family, Al Jarreau is the fifth of six children, his father a singer and his mother is a church pianist, so he is a child born of a musical family.
