Poppy Playtime is first-person survival horror where the player plays as a former employee of Playtime Co. who by Poppy Playtime plot returns to the abandoned toy factory of said company after receiving a letter from the staff who were thought to have disappeared 10 years ago. The Poppy Playtime protagonist discovers that Huggy Wuggy, a large humanoid figure that acts as the mascot of the company, is alive, and is malicious towards them. Players in Poppy Playtime navigate through a first-person view and solve multiple puzzles in order to progress further, some requiring a gadget called the GrabPack, a backpack equipped with two extendable hands used to pull and reach objects from a far distance, conduct electricity and access certain doors. The Poppy Playtime player can also find various VHS tapes lying around the factory, which gives more in-depth explanation of the story.
