Surah Waqiah is the 56th Surah of the Holy Quran and was revealed in Makkah. The main topic discussed in this Surah is the akhirat or afterlife. Picking up from the preceding Surah, Ar-Rahman, which discusses the rewards of Heaven (jannah), this Surah also mentions them and then distinctions them with the punishment of hell. It describes the day of judgement in a very detailed manner, explaining clearly to the people, what the result of their actions will bring them. The chapter also distinguishes the three classes of people in the afterlife, "the foremost", "the companions of the right" and "the companions of the left". According to the Surah, the first two groups will enter paradise while the companions of the left will go to hell. "The right" is associated with goodness, the righteous will be seated to the right of Allah's throne and receive the records of their deeds in their right hand.The "foremost" refers to a special group of people who will have even better fate than the companions of the right in the afterlife.
This Surah, like the rest, has many benefits:
• Reminds us of the power of Allah and all his blessings, strengthening our faith and bringing us closer to Islam and to Allah
• It prevents poverty. Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) said "Whoever reads surah al waqi’ah every night, he will not be struck by piety forever."
• It prevents us from negligence. Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) said "Whosoever reads Surah al-Waqi’ah, then he will be recorded as not belonging to the negligent.”
• It tells us about the beauty of the heavens and the nature of its inhabitants.
• Makes us realize what the punishment of the wrong people will be, hence compelling us to do good and stay on the right path so we could stay safe from the wrath of Allah.
