Antecedentes históricos: em 1943, os alemães esperavam encurtar a frente russa eliminando o Kursk Salient, que havia sido criado após a Batalha de Stalingrado. A Wehrmacht, concentrando a maioria de suas divisões de elite na Frente Oriental nesta área relativamente pequena, imaginou pontas de lança Panzer rompendo os flancos norte e sul da saliência para cercar as forças do Exército Vermelho. No entanto, os soviéticos tinham informações excelentes sobre o plano alemão, chamado de Operação Cidadela.
