The Great Learning was originally the forty-second chapter of the Book of Rites, a Confucian work from the Qin and Han dynasties. Another account attributes its authorship to Zengzi. It proposes three guiding principles: manifesting virtue, loving the people, and attaining the highest good, and eight steps: investigating things, extending knowledge, making one's will sincere, rectifying one's mind, cultivating oneself, regulating one's family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world.
